안녕하세요.
So not too long ago, a university-wide student organization election was taking place. Candidates passing out flyers, gigantic posters everywhere, candy bribes very frequent.
In a plaza, I saw a large poster with one party's slogan:
"New Deal: It worked for America, and SO CAN YOU!"
Wait wha?
Right, the party is named after FDR's New Deal.
But... It worked for America...and so can... you?
They're going to make me work for America? Or, I'm capable of working for America?
"So" in this sentence is an adverb indicating, "therefore." Thus they're saying: The New Deal worked for America; therefore, you can. I can what? Because this auxiliary verb lacks the active verb, I go back to the first clause to look for the implication. Oh, there it is..."work."
The New Deal worked for America; therefore, you can [work].
...I think what they meant to say was, The New Deal worked for our nation, so it ought to work for the university community, too.
I ain't workin' fo' no one!
Needless to say, I didn't vote for them. Neither did the entire English and Linguistics Department, probably.
I might add that FDR's New Deal coalition eventually fell apart...
