Hello.
I dislike "blogs." More specifically, public "blogs" that present too-personal aspects of the writer's life. One: I feel like I'm intruding the blogger's life. Two: It's probably not safe to put that much information on the worldwide web, anyway. Three: I really don't give a damn about the details of who you saw last weekend, what your SAT score was, which professors you find unattractive, who fucked who, whatever.
I really don't care.
You know what I care about?
People's passions.
Passion seems especially significant today because many young people are so "undecided." I'm not speaking simply of college majors or careers, though those become involved, too. I mean, what do you like? What's your hobby? About what can you talk for hours and hours?
Unfortunately many people can't locate their answers, so they resolute to gossip. Talking about other people. Talking shit about other people. Because social interaction is so...direct in anyone's life. So that's all they talk about. That's all they can talk about.
And I'm so disappointed. Disappointed in our generation's inability--or incapability-- to communicate. I'm angry with those who cannot carry on a decent conversation. I pity them. But perhaps it's better to appreciate that contrastingly, I am capable of speaking quality words. Better than wasting my energy on the ignorant or unmotivated ones. Because I do have passion.
You know what I'm passionate about?
Language.
I've created this "blog" to explore my passion for the study of languages.
I'm a Linguistics major, and a French minor. I am Japanese, so naturally I speak fluent Japanese. My Japanese writing could be...eh. I can express, but it's more difficult to physically write those damn kanjis.
Anyway I can call myself bilingual...or 2.75-lingual would be more accurate. With French. I'm at a pretty decent conversational level, but I'm picky about what to call "fluent." I love the French language. Other aspects of French culture... not so much my field.
I love all languages. I'm always curious about many other foreign languages. Lately I'm trying to become familiar with Korean, Thai, and Spanish. I'm very excited about taking Swahili at my university next semester, as well.
In the field of actual Linguistics? I'm about done with my first year of undergraduate studies, so my knowledge of Linguistics is still limited, but sufficient enough to explore further. Right now I am especially interested in bilingualism, second language acquisition, the Optimality Theory, and phonetics/phonology. But again I've had limited exposure to each specific field of Linguistics, mainly through the intro course I took last semester. It was fantastic, by the way. It was everything I wanted it to be. Anyway I might add that my interest in Linguistics does not stop with that list. Everything is so intriguing.
I'm not really sure what I'm trying to accomplish through this blog. Maybe I want to keep a record of the development of my knowledge in Linguistics. Maybe I want to let more people know of this relatively unknown field. Maybe I just want to express my passion.
I aspire to become a linguist and have a theory named after me. After my first name, because it would sound cooler. Yeah.
Oh by the way, I also have a strong passion for art and music, as well. But you may discover that through here. More so the art. If you note sprinkles of music and art allusions throughout my "blog" entries, that would be why.
I express my passion for art through my gallery.
I express my passion for music through performances.
I express my passion for language through words.
Why not? Makes sense to me.
P.S. Updates will be on an extremely irregular basis.
